Intensive Treatment of Type-1 Diabetes Reduces the Risk of Developing Kidney Disease

Intensive Treatment of Type-1 Diabetes Reduces the Risk of Developing Kidney Disease
A medical study conducted in USA has recently revealed that early introduction of aggressive treatment in patients with type-1 diabetes reduces the chances of kidney disorders in half of them. The study involved a group of diabetics, who were followed since 1980s. This revelation was made in an article published in the famous medical journal New England Journal of Medicine; the findings of the study has put emphasis on the need of keeping blood sugar levels near the normal limit for people, who have been newly diagnosed with diabetes. During the study, over 1,400 people with type-1 diabetes were followed by the researchers. Each of the participants was in the early stage of diabetes when they entered the research. It was found that the participants, underwent intensive treatment i.e. a minimum of 3 insulin shots per day or were using insulin pumps, were 50% less likely to develop kidney disease decades later compared to the participants receiving standard  treatment. Low Levels of Anti-inflammatory Protein in Blood Linked with Kid’s Diabetes

Low Levels of Anti-inflammatory Protein in Blood Linked with Kid’s Diabetes
A recent study has shown that increasing levels of a protein in blood that is otherwise known for its anti-inflammatory properties might indicate that a child will have diabetes in future. The study is conducted by the researchers of Georgia Health Sciences University. The researchers are checking the levels of the protein interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, also referred to as IL-1ra in blood of children as the genes of these proteins may trigger type 1 diabetes. Besides this, the researchers are also looking at the missing IL-1ra in diabetic mice for finding out how protein deficiency can affect the immune system and cause destruction of the islet beta cells that produces insulin. Dr. Sharad Purohit, a biochemist of Georgia Health Sciences University, who is involved in this research, says that the research is conducted with the goal of knowing whether the levels of IL-1ra can help in identifying

Is Soy Yogurt a Remedy for the Diabetics?

Is Soy Yogurt a Remedy for the Diabetics?
The researchers of University of Massachusetts, Amherst conducted a study on role of yogurts in treatment of diabetes in the year 2006. The study was published in the Journal of Food Biochemistry in December 2006. Let us find out what was the study all about. The researchers examined different types of yogurts including plain, fruited, soy based yogurts to find out compounds that may help in controlling diabetes. A group of medicines known as alpha-glucosidase inhibitor are often prescribed to the diabetics; this group of medicines works by targeting the enzymes (alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase) in our digestive tract that are responsible for carbohydrate digestion.  With the blocking of these two enzymes’ action, the carbohydrate digestion can be slowed, which eventually slows  [...]
