Foods That Lower Blood Sugar

There are many foods that lower blood sugar that are very beneficial especially for individuals affected by diabetes however there are also many foods that should be avoided whenever possible. What we eat has a direct impact on many functions of our body including the heart, blood pressure and glucose or sugar levels.

In the case of diabetics the body does not have the ability to create insulin to regulate the amount of sugar that remains in the blood stream or in some cases the body simply does not respond to the insulin that is created. This is often referred to insulin resistance. When adequate insulin is not created or the body has developed a resistance to the insulin this sugar or glucose remains in the blood stream thus causing the levels of blood sugar to rise to unhealthy levels. When this happens a condition known as diabetes develops and it becomes necessary to make changes to diet and lifestyle in an effort to control the levels of glucose in the blood. Regular monitoring of these levels then becomes necessary especially if daily insulin shots are needed so as not to inject too much or too little insulin.

Some of the known foods that lower blood sugar effectively include avocados, lemons, cherries, cinnamon, onions, garlic, nuts, water, vinegar and sweet potatoes. Each of these foods has their own individual way of not only lowering the levels of blood sugar but also of having many other health benefits as well because of the amount of other vitamins and minerals that they contain.

Cherries are known to possess soluble fiber as well as antioxidants in addition to having few calories. These benefits work together to increase how much insulin the body creates thus protecting against diabetes. Cherries also help to protect against other health conditions such as heart disease and some cancers.

Adding vinegar to a meal high in simple starches such as those found in potatoes, bread or rice can lower the levels of blood sugar thus decreasing the raise in insulin that often occurs after a meal.

Drinking large amounts of water can effectively lower the levels of sugar in the blood because it works as a natural agent to flush toxins and other dangerous chemicals from the body.

Another food that is high in soluble fiber is avocados. This type of fiber is known to increase the body’s sensitivity to insulin and can actually reverse some cases of insulin resistance. Avocados also possess many other beneficial nutrients such as potassium, protein, folic acid, iron and several different vitamins. The amount of sugar that an avocado contains lessens as it becomes ripe.

It is suggested that by increasing your intake of foods that lower blood sugar you may be able to more effectively control your blood sugar levels than if you relied on medications alone. In mild cases of diabetes the inclusion of these foods could result in the ability to control your condition without the use of these medications.
