Are There Specific Preventive Measures of Type 1 Diabetes?





When discussing preventive measures of type 1 diabetes it is important that individuals understand that there are no guaranteed ways to prevent this type of diabetes. There are merely ways to reduce the risk in some individuals. This is not to say that these steps will work for everyone or that they will prevent development of this disease at some point only that it may reduce the chances of developing this condition.

Type 1 diabetes was once referred to as juvenile diabetes because in many cases it begins in childhood. This type of diabetes is often called insulin dependent diabetes mellitus or IDDM because almost all individuals with this type of diabetic condition find it necessary to take insulin shots in order to keep blood sugar or glucose levels regulated.

Many individuals believe they are not at risk of developing diabetes however many of these people do not realize that if just one of your parents has diabetes that alone increases your chances of developing this condition by half and if both parents have diabetes this chance rises to 75%.

Some preventive measures of type 1 diabetes can include reducing as many risk factors of diabetes as possible however heredity and genetics are issues that cannot be changed no matter how healthy you live. Some contributors you can change however include things like nutrition and exercise.

One of the most important things in any individual with any type of diabetes is nutrition. It is essential for diabetics to eat the proper foods. Some foods that are good choices for individuals with diabetes include fruits and vegetables and lean meats however there are many foods that diabetics should definitely steer clear of as much as possible such as foods that contain large amounts of sugar as well as fried foods and foods that contain large amounts of carbohydrates without any real nutritional value such as potato chips and the like. It is also suggested that another important aspect of diabetes is foot care. It is not recommended for diabetics to go barefoot because diabetes greatly increases the time it takes to properly heal even from small cuts and scratches. Check your feet regularly for any signs of blisters, cuts or other abnormalities and have them treated promptly.

It is also important for diabetics to remain as physically active as possible. Even if your health prevents you from participating in a rigorous daily workout there are other ways of exercising that almost anyone can do such as swimming and walking. Neither of these forms of exercise takes much effort and can be done at whatever pace the individual feels comfortable with.

Although there are no precise preventive measures of type 1 diabetes it is possible to reduce the risk of this serious condition. In some cases it is simply not possible to avoid diabetes no matter what you do and in these cases it is important to follow your health care providers instructions as closely as possible to prevent other complications that can arise from the development of this condition. Diabetes is a dangerous and sometimes even fatal condition however it can be managed and with proper management it can be maintained and you can live a productive life.
